Budget Review Committee

Margaret will contact Cathy Howard regarding outstanding checks, dues, deposits, and a time for the Budget Review Committee to meet.

Budget Review Committee consists of Cathy Parker (incoming Treasurer), Kristi Barber, Margaret Parker (President) and Cathy Howard (outgoing Treasurer).

Shelly will check on the status of our Adopt-A-Spot location (on J. Clyde Morris Blvd in front of the club house).

Board Meetings

Margaret would like to get back to holding monthly board meetings which would consist of the three club officers, our advisor and the President of the WC of Newport News (if she would like to attend).

New Business

Tidewater District, Third VP Director of Junior Clubs

On the district level, no one is interested in holding the position of Third Vice President, Director of Junior Clubs.  Margaret is on her last year in this position.  She has spoken with the Hilton juniors and they are not interested.  If no one steps up, we may not have representation on the district (and therefore state) level for the juniors and Juniorettes.

Fun Summer Activity

Ideas discussed:

  • Pub Crawl
  • Winery Tour (Williamsburg, New Kent, Saude Creek, St. George’s and Weeping Radish)
  • Swap Party (ladies can bring their nicest used items to swap with other ladies.  Items may include clothes, shoes, jewelry, handbags, accessories, housewares, etc.)
  • Faux Slumber Party (an evening filled with slumber party activities, but without sleeping on the floor – snacks, beauty regiments, games, dancing, etc.)
  • October – “The Suffragettes” Movie (October 23 - invite the Juniorettes, dress in period clothes)

Options discussed:

  • Twilight Dinner (a dinner event with wine and live entertainment – this was decided against based on the number of members we have and the amount of work required)
  • Female Farmers Market (invite local female small business owners to sell their goods to the community at the club house – we would include the venue and advertising; they would pay for a table or donate a percentage of sales)
  • Beer Pouring (at City Center – Margaret will check with the Generals to see if she can get a contact name and number as volunteers are decided through the Newport News Rotary Club)

Meeting Hostesses

Margaret will be the hostesses for the September meeting and will bring a sheet to pass around for others to sign up for the remaining months.

If you have not paid your dues ($40) for the current year, please get them to Cathy Parker as soon as possible.

Feedback on Latest Events

  • International Dinner

The food and presentation were well done.  Everyone had a good time.  Possible countries for future dinners are Ireland, Morocco and Brazil

  • Canvas Night

This was a fun event and we would like to continue it in the future.  We have approximately 20 women in attendance and the Hilton Juniors are interested in hosting a similar event in the future.

  • Wine and Dessert

There were ten different wines and a variety of desserts to sample.  Approximately ten people were at the event; however, the weather was poor so more are anticipated next year.  The only suggestion was to add a couple different drinks for the non-wine drinkers.

Tidewater District Meeting

Four members attended the district meeting on Saturday, March 28, at Point Plaza Suites in Newport News.  Our club won three awards.  During the junior business session, we decided to hold a separate Junior Fall District Meeting (in addition to the general session in September) so that more Juniors and Juniorettes will be available to attend.  We have been asked to provide donations for the Junior Fun Night (BINGO prizes) during the GFWC Virginia Convention in May.  Shelly provided a Burlington gift card, Tina will donate a juicer and Kristi will donate a rice steamer.

Report Forms

To make reporting easier, we will reinstate the use of the reporting form at the start of each meeting.

Nominating Committee

Danita will send out the slate of officers for the next administration via email for an electronic vote.  It is important that all members return their vote as soon as possible as these officers will be installed during our upcoming Spring Luncheon.

New Business

Children’s Festival of Friends

Saturday, May 2 at Newport News Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Our application was submitted jointly with the GFWC Peninsula Juniorettes.  The two shifts are 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  We currently have enough coverage for the morning shift (four Juniorettes, Shelly and Cathy P), but need a couple more volunteers in the afternoon (Kayla and one Juniorette).  We will be selling baked goods, water and juice pouches.  Everything will be sold for $1.00 each.  In addition, we have signed up to do face painting free of charge to draw the children to our booth.  The Juniorettes have agreed to bring a face painting “kits” with them and Shelly will provide Q-tips.

Baked Goods:                                   Water:                                Juice Pouches:

Kristi gave an overview at what will be happening at convention this year.  The theme is time travel and sounds like a lot of fun.  Kristi and Margaret will be attending.

  • Tupperware – decided against
  • City Center Events (beer pouring) – agreed we would like to continue.  Kristi will contact Bea Ware and the Ruritans to see what dates are available.

Tina presented a well laid out packet of potential activities to increase membership and to help in reporting areas that we were previously lacking.  This will also make us more visible at the district, state and national levels. (see attached)

Prevent Child Abuse Month

Margaret handed out statistical data sheets and a pinwheel pattern for Prevent Child Abuse Month (April).  Prevent Child Abuse Day is April 13.  Please wear blue on that day to show your support (and report it!)

It was decided to get together as a group on April 24 (Federation Day) for dinner wearing our blue so we may send the photo to GFWC.  There are several areas we will be able to report this activity.  J  Cathy P. will not be able to attend, but will send “Flat Cathy” in her place.

Margaret will send out the phone number to report child abuse if you see it.
